What is Grit and Creativity?
Grit refers to the ability to adhere to long term goals through perseverance of effort and consistency of interest. Creativity, based on contemporary research, refers to one's ability to use the information at hand to develop novel solutions to problems rather than the exclusively creating new information through insight alone. |
How Does Creativity Influence Grit?
Abstract: Unique Solutions for Long Term Goals
Generating novel solutions under stressful conditions typically requires endurance (grit) and insight into restructuring the components of a problem (creativity). The objectives of this study were to investigate the relationship between grit and creativity, and to explore how the effects of stress and personality traits may be correlated with these two constructs. Researchers tested undergraduate students majoring in varied disciplines at the University of Michigan-Dearborn ranging from traditional STEM fields to traditional creative studies. Our results showed that grit and creativity shared a strong correlation with personality as a mitigating factor, reinforcing previous findings. However, response to stress was found to have an inverse relationship with the two when used as a factor, indicating that while stress may promote grit, it may also inhibit creativity. As such, this understanding of both constructs and how they relate to each other, stress, and personality can be applied to education. Teachers and students can learn how to expand upon present skills, build related ones, and how they can apply to fields in new ways; this understanding would be especially valuable to students in unstable situations, learning to use skills they have developed to aid survival to build their future.
